Mit „Smoke & Mirrors“ präsentiert Klangbad das Debut-Album von THE PETTY THEFTS und ein Indie-Album, das einen musikalischen Rundumschlag der letzten vierzig Jahre beinhaltet und dennoch nötig, schön und neu ist.

The Petty Thefts:
Andrew McGinn, Engländer, trifft 2002 in der süddeutschen Provinz Ulms auf Frank Wegling, US-Amerikaner. Frank, nach vielen Jahren musikalischen Weltreisens in Ulm gestrandet, findet in Andrew einen Gleichgesinnten in Sachen Musik und schnell wird klar, dass die beiden ihren Beitrag in der Musikwelt hinterlassen müssen!
Gemeinsam fangen sie an, den für sie richtigen Sound für eine Zeit nach den Beatles oder den Small Faces zu finden. Und auch Künstler wie Charles Dickens oder Andrew Lloyd Webber beeinflussen die Arbeit der beiden.
Ein Kontingent an Songs und Ideen entstehen schon bald und es stoßen mehr und mehr MusikerInnen dazu. Für all die Melodien und Facetten der Songs von Frank Wegling braucht es ein halbes Orchester: Klavier, mehr Gitarren, Cello, Flöte, Geigen und Trompeten!

Auf dem Klangbadfestival begeistern The Petty Thefts 2006 das Publikum und werden ins faust-Studio eingeladen. Hier entsteht in über 2 Jahren Arbeit das erste Studioalbum der Band.

„Smoke & Mirrors“ kann als Universal-Indie-Album gelten. Eine internationale Band bedient sich sämtlicher Stile von Disco bis zu hippieskem Folk und formt Tanzbares daraus, setzt Ohrwurm an Ohrwurm, ist mal langsam traurig und dann wieder energisch fröhlich, dramatisch und leicht.
Die Vielseitigkeit des Debuts spiegelt sich auch in der Koexistenz der zwei Frontmen wider. Beide singen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander, wobei Frank für das warme Nahe zuständig ist, während Andrew schreit, lacht und eine angemessene Portion Brit-Pop mitbringt.
Überhaupt treffen hier Gegenpole aufeinander, die gemeinsam ein starkes Duo ergeben. Frank ist der Musiker, der Komponist, der Romantiker - Andrew sorgt für das Durcheinander und gibt der Band das gewisse Etwas.
Für das Tempo ist das straight-forward-Schlagzeug von Les Wegling verantwortlich, dem Bruder von Frank, der extra aus Amerika eingeflogen wurde, weil er alleine es versteht, der Dynamik von Franks Songs mal kraftvoll nach vorne, mal zurückhaltent bodenständig die Richtung zu geben. Stefan Simon an der zweiten Gitarre ist für die Flächen und das Grundgerüst zuständig.

Blieben diese vier Jungs zu viert, wären sie eine von vielen „the“ Bands.
The Petty Thefts aber erweitern die übliche Bandbesetzung, um einen vollen, orchestralen Klang zu schaffen und den Rahmen zu sprengen.

Ein feiner Teppich an Cello (Sehera Nawaz) und Violine (Victor Gerstner), dazu Flöte oder Klavier (Doro Münsch) sowie eindrucksvollen Backing-Vocals lassen die Songs klingen und verweben sich in harmonische Melodien.
Orchestral und bombastisch kann es dann schnell werden und es war eine bewusste Entscheidung für dieses Album - eine Bestandsaufnahme nicht nur für THE PETTY THEFTS, sondern für die gesamte Indie-Szene - in die Vollen zu greifen. Alles sollte möglich sein, um die Platte möglichst wuchtig zu gestalten.

Eine besondere Note kommt mit der Veröffentlichung beim Klangbad Label und der Aufnahme im faust-Studio dazu. Label und Studio sind normalerweise für experimentelle Musik bekannt, Studiobesitzer und Produzent von „Smoke & Mirrors“ Hans-Joachim Irmler ist selbst Mitbegründer und Mitglied der Krautrock-Legende „faust“.
Diese Zusammenarbeit zwischen The Petty Thefts und dem Klangbad-Umfeld ist auf der Platte permanent hörbar: Gitarren fliegen quer durch Songs und ein gewisser Grundlärm ist immer vorhanden, der die Indie-Songs auf eine interessante Ebene hebt.
Gerade der Titel-Song „Smoke & Mirrors“ zeigt, wie man aus einem Popsong mit wunderbarer Gesangsmelodie einen angenehmen Lärm-Track machen kann. Hier überschlagen sich die Gitarrenebenen, und aus dem Hintergrund schraubt sich das tragische Liebeslied penetrant sanft in den Kopf der Hörer.
Andere Songs bedienen sich klassischen (hitverdächtigen) Indie-Strukturen („GalaBall“, „jiggin“), sind mal Disco („Paperboy“) oder baladesk schön („kids“ und „le dancer“).
Heraus sticht das schizophren-komische „The Legends of Piggy Bottoms“: irre Lachen, phate Beats, ein Text zwischen hysterischem Wahnsinn und Televison-Alltag und ein allumfassendes Chaos am Ende.

Das letzte Lied „The Last Waltz“ dann handelt wieder von Liebe, klingt dramatisch, ergreifend und beschließt ein in sich stimmiges und spannendes Debut-Album der Petty Thefts, von denen noch zu hören sein wird!

With 'Smoke & Mirrors,' Klangbad presents the debut album from the Petty Thefts. This indie record contains musical elements from the last 40 years, yet is both relevant and modern.  Frontmen Frank Wegling (from Cleveland, Ohio) and Andrew McGinn (born in Bournemouth, UK), met in 2002, in the south German town of Ulm. After many previous  musical excursions, Frank found in Andrew his musical foil, and it was quickly clear that they wanted to leave their mark in the music world. Together they began to create a sound that would continue the work of artists such as the Beatles and the Small Faces. The two songwriters would also incorporate such diverse influences as Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charles Dickens. Soon enough, other instruments came into the blend. The songs of Frank Wegling are enhanced by half an orchestra, with violins, cello, flute, and trumpet appearing in various combinations.

The Petty Thefts impressed the Klangbad Festival in 2007, and were invited to record an album in Faust Studio. 'Smoke & Mirrors,' the result of this venture, can be described as a universal indie album. Performed by an international band, the songs flow smoothly from folk, through rock'n'roll, to disco. The music is sometimes melancholy and sometimes energetically happy, with melody after catchy melody.

The many sides of the debut are mirrored in the coexistence of the frontmen. They both sing, although Frank's voice often provides the warmth, while Andrew screams, cackles, and croons. A strong duo is formed by the two. Frank is the musician, composer, and romantic. Andrew is hectic and intense, giving the band that certain something extra. Laying down the beat is Frank's brother, Les, who intuitively understands the dynamic of his brother's songs, both in power and restraint. Stefan Simon on the second guitar adds further color and form.
Were it to stop here as a quartet, the lineup would be like that of many other 'the' bands. But the Petty Thefts deploy the talents of additional musicians to create a full, orchestral sound. Bandmates Doro Münsch, switching between keyboards and flute, and cellist Sehera Nawaz, appear amidst a flurry of violins and backing vocals, to turn things symphonic and bombastic.

The release of 'Smoke & Mirrors' on the Klangbad label, a label normally associated with 'Krautrock' and experimental music, is a point of special interest. The record's producer, Hans-Joachim Irmler, is himself a founding member of legendary Krautrock band Faust, and the album was recorded in his Faust Studio. The collaboration between the Petty Thefts and Klangbad is easy to hear: in the theatrical rise and fall of the music, the guitars shooting straight through the songs, and the presence of a basic noisiness, which keep the songs interesting and addictive. The title track, for example, shows what happens when a pop song with yearning vocal melodies and a cacophony of unsettling noise are combined. Atop the background of chaos floats a tale of love. 
Then there are songs with a classic (hit-worthy) indie structure (Kids, Jiggin'), up-tempo ballads (All You've Got to Give, Gala Ball), and a bit of disco (Paperboy).
The Legend of Piggy Bottoms stands out as a schizophrenic comedy, with maniacal laughter, stomping beats, and a lyric that mixes the surreal with the mundane. The three-ring mayhem culminates in an all-encompassing chaos at its end.
The album's closing track, the thrilling The Last Waltz, is a dramatic love song and the climax of this exciting and harmonious debut by the Petty Thefts, a band from whom we're certain to hear more.
